What’s the one thing you need in order to write (time, money, space, etc.)?

Space, but not the physical kind. I need psychological space, a certain amount of distance so I can get closer to my work. I guess that’s why I get up so early. I know I’ll have the world — my world — to myself.

How about you?

“Space” for me is time alone to write, which I usually get in the morning when everyone is in bed but me (which usually means that when I go to bed, everyone is up but me). Since I write full time now, I’m able to get a tremendous amount of writing done. It’s my most productive time, and has been throughout my writing career.

I need absolute peace and quiet to write.

I wish I could get up at 5 a.m. My mother–who’s also a writer–used to write from 5-7 a.m. three times a week. She was a single mom and this was the only quiet time she had. It took 5-plus years, but she finally finished (and published) her novel. Quite the role model. Now that I know what that effort took, I wish I had been quieter!
